Teen weight loss is a subject that must be approached with caution.  Whereas most adult weight loss programs may be executed without your physician’s blessing, not so with your teen.  Your doctor is the determining factor in your choice of a diet for your teen.  Additionally, the complexities of the teen personality must be considered to avoid psychological water damage cleanup associated with obesity or the imposed pressure to lose weight by the parent.  In any event a total program approach should be considered consisting of diet, exercise, counseling, and healthy lifestyle orientation.

What is appropriate is a smart, knowledgeable, understanding of the principles of healthy eating.  The teen must understand the downside of fast food, snacks, and sweets.  Additionally he must understand the beneficial effects of exercise and the role that exercise plays in overall health.

Certainly no starvation dieting is appropriate while the growth cycle is still in play.  In certain instances, undue pressure on dieting as the sole solution to obesity can be downright dangerous.

The school is doing a poor job of helping the teen and consequently the parent needs to intervene in helping to develop good food habits at an early age.  Typically, many parents find themselves woefully inadequate in the knowledge of healthy living and are, themselves, obese and may be otherwise, abusing their bodies.

Natural weight loss is preferred for teens wherein much of their food is prepared or at least influenced at home.  The vending machine is not the teen’s friend as is the fast food eatery not his friend as well.

Exercise is mandatory and should be paired with wise eating habits and abstinence from certain high caloric foods.  The role of exercise on the body needs to be understood and the teen himself, involved in some sort of an active sports or exercise program for sound teen weight loss.

Unless morbidly obese, the teen can typically bring his weight under control with help from his physician, good food management practices and a solid program of physical activity.  The solution to teen weight loss does not lie in a radical, dieting program absent a solid, physical activity plan.
